South Pelion to Karpenisi Roadtrip

Spring is here and these perfect, sunny days are ideal for exploring the incredible corners of this country with roadtrips around Greece. While I do enjoy more going on train trips, neither the country’s railway system encourages long trips, nor does it offer the independence to visit remote towns and villages far from major cities due to lack of connections and insufficient stops along the route.

I had never thought of visiting Spetses, since Hydra was my go-to island for a quick escape near Athens. That was until four years ago when an impromptu trip to visit a friend working on this island finally brought me to Spetses. Be it a day trip though, I didn’t have the chance to explore the island properly.

The gorge of Samaria was on my bucket list for years as it was a must-visit destination for me. Since I had never been to Crete until 2015 and the fact that I thought that one should be in great shape to walk through the gorge, I only came to visit it six months before my 30th birthday. It was only then when I decided to put on my running shoes and stand at Xyloskalo where the path starts, ready to do it.

To me, on the contrary, Athens is an amazing city with a unique personality. A living and breathing organism that slowly but steadily develops, growing better each day. Each step forward brings a series of setbacks and difficulties but that doesn’t prevent many young Athenians from trying to revitalize the city’s image and spirit.
